The University of Geneva formalized this Thursday, its refusal to tolerate the occupation of the Uni Mail Hall on Thursday, started the day before by Propalestinian students. These student activists call on UNIGE to suspend its collaborations with Israeli universities, especially those of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. They ask other Swiss academic institutions to do the same.
In A position published on its sitethe Alma Mater calls on the occupants to “normalize their presence” by filing a request for reservation of the space. Otherwise, a police intervention could take place. It indicates that it has already requested the police, “which will themselves define the modalities as the calendar of their intervention”.
Occupation nocturne
Student coordination for Palestine (CEP-Unige), which launched the movement, organized a general meeting on Wednesday evening. The students present voted in favor of maintaining the occupation overnight. Around forty of them have Dorm on site.
-In its text, UNIGE says it recognizes that students’ demands, focused on humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, are “legitimate and must be able to express themselves”. She claims not to restrict freedom of expression. But she believes that this debate must be held within the framework provided by the institution. “Respecting the rules is not a simple administrative constraint,” she writes. It allows everyone, especially during exams, to work and study under normal conditions. ”
“Dysfunctions”
The University points out what it considers as several dysfunctions linked to the occupation: displaced furniture, sound disturbances in the hall, embarrassments for the users of the library. She also underlines that the safety of people cannot be guaranteed in the context of an undersear nocturnal presence.
For the time being, UNIGE maintains its call for “normalization” of the occupation. “The institution still expects occupants that they and they express their claims in a conformity, allowing a peaceful dialogue around the ethical, legal and political issues that are at the heart of their concerns,” concludes the press release.
Like last year, an arm wrestling is committed. On Thursday afternoon, students moved mobilization to Uni Dufour, installing their claims at the gates of the Rector Audrey Leuba office.
