The Roman community of the Pays de Friborg (CRPF) denounces the political will of the commune of Friborg aimed at “Germanizing its administration, its institutions and its communication at all costs”. She believes that the peace of languages is nourished by stability and mutual respect.

(Keystone-ATS) “The last illustration of this desire is the decision to put in the competition the creation of a bilingual visual identity (logo) which ignores the linguistic and legal reality of the municipality. The purpose of this strategy is “to impose short -term recognition of German as a second official language and thus to entrust the city governance to a bilingual elite,” the CRPF said on Monday.
The organization believes that access to certain functions could be closed in the future to non -bilingual French speakers. Thus, in the event that the German language also becomes official, more than 20,000 eligible French -speaking citizens no longer have the linguistic skills allowing them, for example, to sit effectively within the municipal council or the general council.
The CRPF is also concerned about the possible deletion of the current guarantee for any French -speaking of the Sarine district to benefit from legal proceedings in its language. She asked the municipal council of Friborg to renounce her project of visual identity which tends to “impose on the Hussarde an institutional bilingualism without delay the outcome of the debates of the Grand Council on the future cantonal law on languages”.
Language territoriality
The organization requests that the official language of the majority of the city’s population be respected, which officially claims to be of French language (85%) and which, for the most part, does not practice German. It invites the Council of State, in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Constitution and the Friborg Constitution, to enforce the principle of the territoriality of languages.
The CRPF does not dispute the need to guarantee the German -speaking linguistic minority of the city of Friborg, especially in school matters, due to its historic anchoring. “However, these rights do not imply the recognition of German as a second official language of the commune of Friborg,” she said.
