The Canadian defender is one of the three finalists for the recruit of the year. The other two are striker Macklin Celebrini, Sharks from San José, and goalkeeper Dustin Wolf, Flames de Calgary.
Hutson concluded the season at 1is Rank of NHL recruits for points with 66, and for the time of use with 22 min 44 s per match. Since 1944, it is 4e Defender to conduct recruits for points in one season, after Bobby Orr, Brian Leetch and Quinn Hughes.
But above all, he spent the season flirting with the various records for first -year defenders. In short:
- 4e Total points, behind Larry Murphy (76), Brian Leetch (71) and Gary Suter (68);
- 1is total passes in one season, tied with Larry Murphy (60);
- 1is Total points with equal forces, tied with Larry Murphy (40).
It is without forgetting the fact that he set a team record at the Canadian for a recruit, attacker or defender, with 60 passes. Its 66 points also constitute the 3e Total for a beginner player, behind Kjell Dahlin and Mats Naslund (71). A jovialist would say that Hutson established the brand for a non-Swedish.
Hutson also took advantage of the break from the confrontation of the 4 nations to relaunch its season. In the 12 games before the tournament, it had indeed been limited to 5 points and shown a differential of -16.
After the break, he raised 25 points in 26 outings, in addition to presenting a +18 differential, all that when his team was fighting for a place in series.
Its differential must however be put into perspective. At 5 against 5, his team displays an assessment of +12 when it is on the skating rink (74-62). On their own, the goals scored when the Canadian withdrew his goalkeeper (2-14) weigh his file.
-Hutson has also completed his exploits as the lightest player among those who spent the complete in the NHL, at 162 lb. He notably succeeded by avoiding the shoulder of the opponents, he who was defeated 129 times, a very reasonable figure given his time of use.
Since Dahlin in 1985-1986, Hutson is only the third representative of the finalist CH for the Calder. The other two: Brendan Gallagher in 2013, and Michael Ryder in 2003-2004. For the last winner, you have to go back to Ken Dryden, in 1971-1972.
Celebrini scored 25 goals and 38 assists for 63 points, but in just 70 games, in a club that we knew how to drop before the start of the season. If he had also played the 82 games, he would probably have doubled Hutson for the points.

Celebrini, however, presented a differential of -31, but he also played in the worst NHL team, by far. The Sharks showed a goal differential of -105, far behind -70 of the Blackhawks. Celebrini was also the youngest permanent NHL player this season; He will be 19 years old in June.
Like Hutson, Wolf also experienced a race for series at its recruit year. The flames missed the tournament on equality, because they have raised as many points as the Blues, the last team qualified in the West.
Wolf dominated his peers with 29 wins. Its 53 departures also constitute the highest total for a first year goalkeeper since the 55 departures of Jimmy Howard in 2009-2010.
The winner of the Calder trophy is determined after a ballot held with representatives of the Association of Professional Hockey Chroniclers (PHWA).
