Dazn proposed two formulas at broken prices to maintain the broadcast of Ligue 1 as revealed by the newspaper L’Equipe. Offers refused by the LFP, which favors a breach of contract.
The divorce between Dazn and the Professional football League (LFP) seems inevitable. But before slamming the door, the main diffuser of Ligue 1 attempted a last poker stroke. According to information from the team, the platform sent two “low-cost” offers to broadcast Ligue 1 until 2029. Two formulas deemed largely insufficient by the LFP, which categorically refused them.
Dazn’s first proposal? An annual package of 200 million euros, comprising 150 million € fixed for its 8 current matches and an additional € 50 million to buy the poster broadcast by BeIN Sports. The objective: to become the exclusive diffuser of all of the Ligue 1 meetings.
An alternative provided, in the absence of agreement with BeIN, the maintenance of the 8 matches for € 150 million with a € 50 million bonus, this time conditioned on “audiovisual product” improvement criteria: reinforced behind -the -scenes, stars interviews, maximum immersion. A very Anglo-Saxon vision, but far from the current standards of French football.
Variable remuneration indexed to Dazn’s income
Another aspect of these offers: a variable part linked to the turnover of Dazn France. The proposed model granted 75 % of LFP revenues up to € 300 million, then a sharing at 50-50 beyond this threshold. An original, but risky idea: unlike remuneration indexed on the number of subscribers, this diagram left the LFP dependent on the commercial strategy of Dazn … especially on the price of the subscription.
Clearly, if Dazn decided to lower its prices to boost its customer base, income for the LFP would be mechanically reduced. A bet that the league refused to take, preferring solid guarantees to hypothetical projections.
A colossal shortfall for clubs
By accepting these offers, the LFP would have seen its guaranteed income drop in a drastic way: from € 475 million today (€ 375 million from Dazn + € 100 million in BeIN) to only € 150 to 200 M € per year. Either, at worst, three times less than at present. An unacceptable loss for professional clubs, already weakened by the instability of TV rights since the Mediapro affair.
The LFP also regrets that Dazn has not revised its offer since its deposit, more than a month ago. No gesture, no counter-proposition despite a clear rejection. The broadcaster, for his part, deplores the lack of dialogue on the part of the league and maintains his complaint before the courts, claiming 573 million euros for “breach” and “deception on the goods”.
The point of no return seems to be reached. On Tuesday, the LFP ratified the early end of the contract in June 2025, despite the official failure of mediation. French football will have to bounce back… once again.
