After oil, gas. Senegal has just taken a major step in its energy development. In a press release published this Wednesday, the British company British Petroleum (BP) announced the loading of the very first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Grand Turtle Ahmeyim (GTA) project, which it shares with Mauritania.
This first delivery marks the official launch of gas production for both countries. The gas, extracted off the coast of Saint-Louis and Mauritania, has been liquefied and stored on board the floating ship FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas), positioned about 10 kilometers from the coast. The cargo was then transferred to a maritime carrier. It is the first of a series of ten cargoes scheduled by the end of 2027.
“This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks a new significant supply for global energy markets. The start of exports of Phase 1 of GTA is an important step for BP, “said Gordon Birrell, executive vice-president responsible for production and BP operations. He also praised the collaboration of the Senegalese and Mauritanian governments as well as that of the project partners: Kosmos Energy, Petrhan (Sénégal) and SMH (Mauritania).
According to BP projections, the first phase of the GTA project should produce around 2.4 million tonnes of LNG per year once the entire production process is fully operational.
