The prices of rare land on the soar after China has announced export restrictions on seven metals of rare and heavy land.

It is a large group of elements in the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines and high -tech equipment. This decision comes in a context of trade tensions between the States and China, causing a strong reaction to the market.

In , dysprosium prices have tripled since early April, reaching 850 dollars/kg. The prices of the terbium have even climbed up to $ 3,000/kg, the highest level for almost 10 years.

Among the 17 elements of rare earths, medium and heavy metals such as dysprosium and terbium are rarer and more difficult to extract. China still represents approximately 90 % of the global supply of this group.

The export restrictions imposed by China not only increased prices, but also put in great danger the world supply chains.

Finding sources of short -term alternative supply is almost impossible, according to Takahiro Sato, expert from the Mizuho Bank. Professor Toru Okabe of the University of Tokyo warned that if the shortage persists, many electric car manufacturers will have to suspend their production plans.

Faced with the turbulence caused by the tightening of exports of rare earths by China, Vietnam suddenly has become a positive point in the eyes of international investors thanks to its reserves of up to 3.5 million tonnes, according to the latest of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) published in March 2025.

The mines of rare land located on the northwest and central coast, in particular in Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Quang Nam, are considered to have a high ore content and great operating potential. However, the actual production of Vietnam is still quite low, reaching only 300 tonnes in 2024.

The Vietnamese government has set itself an ambitious objective by announcing a plan aimed at producing 2.02 million tonnes of rare land by 2030. This shows its determination to develop the rare land industry as a strategic sector.

Despite great potential, Vietnam is still faced with many challenges. The in -depth treatment capacity is still limited, the operating technology is not modern and the national production still lacks connectivity. In addition, logistical infrastructure and policies aimed at attracting investments in depth transformation is not yet synchronized, which leads to many difficulties in export activities.

In a context where the major powers such as the United States, Japan and the European are trying to find alternative sources of supply to China to ensure the security of the supply chain, this is an excellent opportunity for Vietnam to reposition its strategic role on the global rare earth map.
