Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lejone Mpotjoane, announced on Monday that his government planned to open discussions with the United States about high customs duties imposed recently on the country by the Trump administration.
Maseru favors dialogue with Washington about customs taxes. At a press conference in Maseru, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lesotho, Lejone Mpotjoane said that contrary to rumors relayed by certain international media, his country had no formal commitment to Washington at this stage.
He revealed that the government, through its embassy in the United States, is working to organize a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Samuel Matekane and US President Donald Trump to directly address this issue.
According to the head of diplomacy, Lesotho is preparing for diplomatic deliberations to plead in favor of an outcome favorable to its economy, heavily dependent on textile exports to the American market.
In early April, the Trump administration announced a 50 % price increase on Lesothanes exports to the United States, causing immediate pressure on the textile sector, the main economic pillar of the country of Southern Africa.
