The place of November 16, one of the most popular crossroads in Marrakech, is entering a new transformation phase as part of the “Grand Guéliz” program.
According to a press release, a copy of which has reached us in Lareleve.ma, the work of the first collective underground car park in the city has just been started, with a clear objective: unclogging the city center while upgrading the public space on the surface.
The project, which spans an area of 9,500 m², mobilizes a budget of 98 million dirhams. It provides two levels of underground parking, capable of accommodating 460 cars and 60 motorcycles, supplemented by 10 charging stations for electric vehicles. Access will be via three strategic arteries: rue Al Qadi Ayyad, Rue Oued El Makhazine and Avenue Hassan II.
According to the same source, ambition exceeds the simple fact of creating parking. Indeed, the upper space will be fully reclassified, integrating vegetated areas, a fountain, redesigned lighting and a space dedicated to cultural exhibitions and events. An assumed way to reconcile functional usefulness and urban development.
The project, which will be carried out within eight months, is carried out by an institutional synergy between the municipal council of Marrakech, the Marrakech-Safi region, the wilaya, the Ministry of Town Planning, with Marrakech Mobility as delegated contracting authority.
By releasing the surface for more open and shared uses, concludes the same press release, Marrakech is part of a logic of gentle but structuring transformation: to requalify urban centralities from below, without rupture, but with a clear vision of mobility and living environment.
