- The armed forces have exchanged cashmere fire for five consecutive nights.
- Pahalgam’s attack took 26 victims in Indian cashmere.
- India demands the departure of Pakistani citizens from its territory.
Indian and Pakistani soldiers exchanged gunshots for the cashmere for the fifth consecutive night, the Indian army said a week after a week after a murderous attack triggered an escalation between the two nuclear powers.
As in the previous nights, the Indian army reported that the Pakistani troops had opened fire to the light weapon on its positions close to the control line in cashmere, de facto border between the two countries.
No victim
The Indian army indicated that its troops had “responded in a measured and effective manner to provocation”. New Delhi did not mention any victim. There was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan.
The tension between India and Pakistan has been at its height since the attack carried out on April 22 by armed men in Pahalgam, Indian Kashmir, who killed 26 victims.
Without waiting for a claim, New Delhi has attributed responsibility for this attack on Islamabad, the deadliest targeting civilians committed in the Muslim majority for several decades. Pakistan denied any involvement and demanded a “neutral investigation” on its circumstances.
Reprisals
The two countries have launched reprisals against each other and ordered the closure of the border. India set the deadline for the departure of Pakistani citizens from its territory on Tuesday. Analysts fear that belligerent declarations will lead to a possible military action.
The cashmere, a majority of Muslim, was divided between India and Pakistan to their independence in 1947. The two neighbors have since continued to demand sovereignty throughout the territory. Since 1989, the fighting between separatist insurgents and Indian troops have made tens of thousands of deaths.
