The election of the first American pope was welcomed by Donald Trump, the American president.
If he admitted that he was not the biggest fan of Pope Francis, Donald Trump praised the election this Thursday, May 8, of the American Cardinal Robert Prevost. Leon XIV will therefore be the first American pope in history.
On his social network Truth Social, American President Donald Trump has congratulated the new Pope, the first American sovereign Pontiff in history. “What a great honor for our country,” he exclaimed.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who has just been named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that it is the first American pope. What excitement and what great honor for our country. I can’t wait to meet Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very significant moment!” wrote Donald Trump.
The American cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected Thursday as a new Pope to succeed François, died on April 21, after two days of conclave and four ballot towers. He is deemed close to the late Pope Francis.
Originally from Chicago, Robert Francis Prevost spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru before becoming a cardinal in 2023. He gave little interviews to the media and rarely speaks in public. The new sovereign pontiff, 267th pope of the Catholic Church, pronounced with emotion but ease his first speech of Pope before the crowd gathered on Saint-Pierre square.
