A violent thunderstorm surprised and injured two German hikers in a national park in the Czech Republic last Saturday.
The two were traveling near the German border in the area of the Tyssa walls when they were caught by the storm.
The Tyssa walls are located in the west of Bohemian Switzerland, a national park on the Czech-German border.
When the storm started, the German tourists looked for protection under a tree – a mistake. A flash hit her directly and even left a fire hole in the woman’s T-shirt.
Pain on the face and visual disturbances
After the lightning strike, the injuries between the villages of Tyssa and Raitza were found by another group of German hikers. The tourists hit the flash had “disoriented”.
The injured were brought to a nearby rest area. Shortly afterwards, the emergency services and the mountain rescue service also arrived there.
Miroslav Racko, head of the Czech mountain rescue service, reports: «After a first examination, we found burns in the chest area at both tourists. Based on the fire holes on their clothing, lightning strikes could be clearly detected. »
The man struck by lightning complained about severe pain in the face and visual disturbances in one eye.
The injured were brought to ústí Nad Labem with two ambulances to the hospital, 15 kilometers away.
Prokop Voleník, spokesman for the emergency services, told the Czech news portal “Denik”: “One of the tourists was admitted with serious injuries, the second patient with medium-heavy injuries.”
The Czech authorities urgently warn hikers of looking for protection when thunderstorms under trees.
They also point out that cell phone reception is not everywhere in the valleys of Bohemian Switzerland. Therefore, carrying cards is strongly recommended.
