Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, and the emir of Kuwait, Mechaal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, launched an urgent call for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. This request occurs in a dramatic context where nearly 51,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the last 18 months in this besieged region. This call was issued after a meeting between the two leaders, concluding the official two -day Sissi visit to Kuwait.

During this visit, the two heads of state held an extended session with the delegations of their respective countries, followed by a bilateral interview. In a press release from the Egyptian presidency, the emir of Kuwait expressed his satisfaction for this visit, describing it as “the reflection of the depth of exceptional bilateral relations between the two countries”. This visit was also perceived as “an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation in various fields, especially economic and in terms of investment”.

Regarding the situation in Gaza, the two leaders stressed “the need for an immediate and urgent cease-fire, to continue the exchanges of hostages and prisoners”, as well as “the unhindered transportation of humanitarian aid in sufficient quantity”. They expressed their “total support for the Arabic plan for the recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip”. This plan should be implemented upon the establishment of a ceasefire.

The two officials reiterated “their categorical rejection of any forced displacement of the Palestinians”. They also put forward “the absolute need for a just and global solution to the Palestinian question”, involving the creation of an independent Palestinian state according to the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as capital.

In addition, the Kuwaitian Minister for Diwan of the Emir, Mohamed Abdullah al-Moubarak al-Sabah, announced that the meeting had focused on the main questions of common interest and the latest regional and international developments, in particular concerning Gaza. According to the official Kuwaitian news agency (Kuna), discussions highlighted the importance of a peaceful and fair resolution of the Palestinian cause by establishing a Palestinian state, a cease-fire and immediate humanitarian aid in Gaza.

Finally, the Egyptian presidency said that President Sissi left Kuwait, praised by the emir and several officials present. For the record, this visit to Kuwait is part of a tour in the Gulf, started with a visit to Qatar a few days earlier.
