MONTRÉAL, the 6 out of 2025 /CNW/ – The union Metallos announces a change in the organization’s management: the Quebec director Dominic Lemieux Announces his departure, effective from May 15. It is his current assistant, Nicolas Lapierrewhich will take over to the management of the largest private sector union in Quebec, which has 60,000 members.
Dominic Lemieux was a member of the union management since 2016, as assistant at first, then as director since April 2020. “It was an honor to direct this great union. We led with the Métallos activists as well as other unions of beautiful struggles, which led to the prohibition of all forms of clauses of disparity of treatment in Quebec, to an anti-federal strike law as to better protection of pensions in the event of bankruptcy. We have passed through the pandemic, we fought rampant inflation, making sure that our members have their fair share, and we are continuing the fight for occupational health and safety, ”said Dominic Lemieux.
At the dawn of the regional meetings of the metallos and, above all, the nominations for the next elections of the international leaders who will take place in the fall, Dominic Lemieux Choose to give way. He intends to complete his master’s degree in industrial relations at the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières and possibly take up new professional challenges.
“The metallos have forged me. I owe this organization a lot. I wish to act responsible for not putting my name in the hat of the next elections when I know that I will not complete another mandate. Whoever takes over, at first in an interim manner, will have the opportunity to meet the members this spring, before the fall elections. I have fully confidence in Nicolas Lapierre To take over and continue with the same vigor our union action, ”argues Dominic Lemieuxwho had started his career as a minor in Abitibi before continuing in the steel in Montérégie, within the local section 6951.
-Nicolas Lapierre is appointed to assume the interim until the next elections which will take place by universal suffrage of the members at the end of November. Originally from Côte-Nord, the latter had been assistant to the director since May 2023, after being a regional coordinator in Sept-Îles for seven years. He worked at the Laboratory at the Old Pointe-Noire dumpling plant in Sept-Îles.
The union Metallos, affiliated with the FTQ, is the largest union in the private sector in Quebec. It brings together more than 60,000 workers from all economic sectors.
