The world of British motorcycle sport is in mourning. Two pilots lost their lives on Monday following a terrible pile up in a race for the British Supersport championship in Oulton Park, in Cheshire, in the northwest of England. The accident, which occurred in the first round, involved 11 motorcycles and caused the immediate suspension of the race, followed by the cancellation of the entire program of the day.
Briton Owen Jenner, 21, and New Zealanders Shane Richardson, 29, died of their injuries. According to the organizer Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR), Jenner was the victim of a “catastrophic injury to the head”, while Richardson, seriously touched in the chest, died before his arrival in the hospital.
As we report Ouest-France, a third pilot, Tom Tunstall, 47, was emergency to hospital with serious back and abdomen injuries. His condition remains worrying.
Five other competitors-Carl Harris, Max Morgan, Cameron Hall, Freddie Barnes and Morgan McLaren-Wood-were taken care of for light injuries. Three pilots involved in the accident – Lewis Jones, Corey Tinker and George Edwards – came out unscathed from the incident.
The British Supersport is a category league lower than the British Superbike Championship (BSB), the reference competition for track motorcycles in the United Kingdom. An investigation was opened to determine the exact circumstances of the drama. MSVR expressed condolences to families and relatives of the deceased pilots, while welcoming the rapid intervention of the rescue.
