Then rebelote in 2016, he transformed the ASB into a full -fledged political movement: theUnion Sauvez BUCAREST (USB). His party will collect 25% of the votes without taking up major space in the localities of Bucharest.
But Nicusor Dan no longer wants to be satisfied with the local level and the same year aims for the legislative elections. USB becomes the USR: theUnion save Romania. His party will arrive third in the elections by winning almost 9% of the votes, allowing Nicusor Dan to become a deputy.
Despite the encouraging score of his party, Nicusor Dan leaves the presidency of the USR in 2017 after internal divisions on the homosexual marriage issue. The majority of party members were indeed unfavorable to registration of a heterosexual definition of marriage (the union of a man with a woman) in the constitution. A progressive vision that did not share Nicusor Dan, who then decides to resign.
Again independent, he recovered for the third time in the race for the capital of the capital in 2020 and will be supported by the USR, his former party. He will win a victory with 43% of the votes and will finally become mayor of Bucharest, before being re -elected a second time in 2024. He has been boasting since having modernized the heating system and sports facilities, while saving the city of bankruptcy.
A surprise candidacy
For almost 5 years, Nicusor Dan was therefore fully invested for Bucharest. But shortly after the announcement of the cancellation of the 2024 presidential election, the 55 -year -old man announced – to everyone’s surprise – his candidacy for the country, still as an independent. After “the shock” of November, he decided to embark on the arena hoping to be able to embody the pro-European renewal.
Well aware that a large part of the population has lost confidence in traditional policies to turn to populism, he has focused his campaign on Transparency, fight against corruption and good governance. He wants, like his action in Bucharest, modernize and clean up the country.
