An exchange in the British Parliament relaunched, Tuesday, April 29, speculations on the government’s commitment to the ambitious energy transfer project between the United Kingdom and Morocco.
Arrested during oral questions by deputy Andrew Murrison (conservative, South West Wiltshire), the Minister responsible for the energy transition, Ed Miliband, confirmed the continuation of exchanges with the company XLinks, promoter of an underwater electrical link connecting the Moroccan coasts to those of Devon. This project, which provides for the routing of solar and wind energy over a distance of almost 3,800 kilometers, has been feeding sustained attention in parliamentary and industrial circles for several months.
Mr. Miliband said: “I know that the very honorable deputy manifests a keen interest in this file. Discussions with Xlinks continue, and we are at his disposal to keep him informed. ”
Without delivering calendar elements as to a possible ministerial validation, the Minister nevertheless reiterated the government’s desire to maintain a “constructive” dialogue with project leaders.
This energy corridor, the cost of which is estimated at several tens of billions of pounds sterling, aims to diversify the sources of supply of the United Kingdom while reducing its dependence on fossil hydrocarbons. According to promoters of the program, it would satisfy up to 8 % of British electricity consumption.
Negotiations between the British and XLinks authorities are part of a broader framework of strategic reassessment of international energy partnerships, at a time when geopolitical tensions are growing several European chancelleries to explore new methods of cooperation with North African countries.
