Denmark should have eradicated cervical cancer by 2040, thanks to membership of the HPV vaccination program and screening, the Danish League for Cancer announced on Monday.
“Even before 2040, so few women could be affected by the disease that it could be considered to be eliminated”welcomed the Danish League to fight cancer in a statement. “It will be the first time that a type of cancer has disappeared”she adds.

Vaccination coverage reaching 89%
Currently, the rate of recurrence of this type of cancer is less than 10 out of 100,000, according to a study published in the Journal of Danish doctors. According to the criteria of the World Health Organization, the disease will be considered eradicated in Denmark with a recurrence rate of less than 4 out of 100,000.
The rate of vaccination against papillomavirus infection (HPV), the main cause of the disease, is 89% for 12 -year -old boys and girls at the first of the two doses of the vaccine. It is a little less than the target of 90%. The free vaccine was introduced to girls in 2008/2009 and 2019 in boys.
On screening, 60% of women in Denmark accept the offer, ten points less than the target of 70% participation. Sweden displays an even closer eradication objective, in 2027, according to the Swedish Cancer (RCC) (RCC) (RCC) centers.
