Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he informed US President Donald Trump that kyiv is ready to start peace talks “in any format”, if Russia demonstrates his will by implementing a total and unconditional cease-fire.
In a message published on X, Zelensky clarified that the interview with Trump had focused on the situation on the battlefield and that it had proposed the immediate launch of a 30-day ceasefire. “We are waiting for Russia to support this proposal,” he said.
He insisted on the attachment of Ukraine to the diplomatic path. “I also reaffirmed that Ukraine is ready to participate in discussions in any format. But for that, Russia must demonstrate the sincerity of its intentions to end the war, starting with a total and unconditional ceasefire, “said Zelensky.
The Ukrainian head of state added that Trump had been favorable to the idea of a cease-fire and confirmed his desire to contribute to put an end to the conflict. “We have agreed to maintain our contacts,” he said.
-Zelensky also praised the ratification by the Ukrainian Parliament of the economic partnership agreement with the United States, qualifying this text as a “historic document” which opens up new prospects for bilateral cooperation.
This telephone call coincided with the day of victory in Europe, a moment of common commemoration of the defeat of Nazism, recognized by the two leaders.
For the record, a spokesperson for the Kremlin had previously accused kyiv of lacking seriousness, while Ukraine claims to wait for concrete acts from Moscow.
