VIDEO – Feminist activists have symbolically widespread pink smoke near the Vatican to denounce the absence of women in the conclave which must be held in the coming hours.
-A group of women in the movement “The Women’s Ordination Conference” lit pink smoke bombs on a hill behind the Vatican this Wednesday, May 7 to protest against the Catholic Church dominated by men, a few hours before 133 cardinals voters met in the Sistine Chapel to choose the next Pope.
“While the world may expect white or black smoke, our pink smoke is a signal that women should be included in all aspects of the life of the Church,” said Kate MCELWEE, executive director of the movement. “We send pink smoke above the Vatican just before the entry of the cardinals because we want to make them understand very clearly that they cannot continue to ignore women,” added Miriam Duignan, of the Catholic Research Institute.
An exclusively male conclave
Since 1918, the law of the church provides that Catholic priests, and men can be cardinal, therefore. The presence of a cardinal woman with a conclave would only be possible by a profound change in the law of the church.
