
Agenda – Ten days after the death of pope Francis, the cardinals around the world meet in a conclave to elect the new sovereign pontiff
It will start with a mass. Cardinals around the world gathered in Rome for the election of the next pope are expected for a solemn ceremony in the Saint-Pierre basilica in the Vatican on Wednesday at 10 a.m. D -day of the start of the conclave.
In the afternoon, at 4:15 p.m., they gathered in the Pauline chapel. The cardinals of the Latin Church wear according to the Vatican a “red dress with belt, Rochet [une aube courte] mosette [une pèlerine courte]pectoral cross with red and gold cord, ring, cap and barrette ”, while those of the oriental churches are dressed with their own ecclesiastical costumes.

After the last liturgical song, the cardinals take the oath. The Master of Celebrations pronounces the formula “Extra Omnes” (all outside) and the foreign people in the votes leave. Only the cardinals remain, those under the age of 80, 113. They will be housed throughout the conclave in the Sainte-Marthe residence.

There is little chance for a white smoke, a sign of a new elected pope, or visible on Wednesday evening Place Saint-Pierre. From the next day, the cardinals will be able to vote up to four times a day, at the rate of two ballot in the morning, and two in the evening, until they agree. If no cardinal has obtained two thirds of the votes, the voters pass directly in a second round.
