In the burning streets of Rabat, Tunis, or in the remote villages, stray dogs are everywhere… And yet invisible. We meet them without really looking at them. They are Enight, injured, terrorized. Some have only the skin on the bones and seek something to soothe constant hunger.
Others drag a broken leg, A lifestyle hung on pain. And their eyes, Those who dare to cross them, tell everything: wandering, fear, blows, cries, stones, rifles.
Because yes, when they are not ignored, they are hunted down. Poisoned, slaughtered, mutilated. Because they disturb. Because there are too many. Because, in some districts, stray dogs are seen as a problem to erase. We pick up the bodies in the early morning. Without a witness, without noise.
And yet they are sensitive beings. They feel. They cry their little deaths. They tremble under thunderstorms. They attach themselves to the human who hands them a bread quignon. They hope.
But these dogs did not choose their fate. They were born there, because no one sterilized their parents. Because abandonment has become commonplace. Because the authorities are turning their eyes, or worse, orchestrate “cleaning” campaigns as violent as they are.
In Morocco and Tunisia, Local associations are fighting. With few means. With their hands, their hearts, and sometimes even their own salary. They save, treat, sterilize, rehabilitate, adopt … They do what governments should do for a long time.
We refuse that cruelty is an answer to negligence. We refuse that these dogs are killed to compensate for inaction. We want a real national program for sterilization, vaccination and protection of stray dogs.
It takes a clear public policy. Sterilization, vaccination campaigns. Measures to protect, and not to eliminate.
Because killing has never solved a problem.
Because these dogs suffer. Because they exist.
Morocco and Tunisia must officially agree to deal with the question of stray dogs with ethics and responsibility. Massacres are not a solution. They have never solved the problem. They only add suffering to injustice.
Concretely, here are the actions we ask for:
- The implementation of national sterilization and vaccination programs.
- Immediate stopping slaughter and poisoning.
- Concrete support for local animal protection associations.
- A awareness campaign to develop mentalities.
These dogs did not choose the street. It is our abandonments, our negligence, our silence that condemned them there.
Today, we are their only hope!
