Harvard will no longer receive federal state subsidies, announces the Trump administration

The showdown continues between Harvard University and the Trump administration. “Harvard should no longer for federal subsidies, since she will no longer receive it”warned the Secretary of American Education, Linda McMahon, in a letter addressed on Monday May 5 in Alan Garber, the president of the institution located near Boston.

“Harvard will no longer be an institution funded by the State and will be able to operate as a private institution (…) by collecting funds from its important pool of former wealthy students ” In particular, she continues, saying that the university established near Boston (northeast) “Receives billions of dollars from taxpayers each year”but without specifying the amounts at stake.

A great support from , Donald Trump accuses Harvard anti -Semitism and other renowned American universities like Columbia, for having left the student movements against the war in Gaza on their campuses.

Large American universities are more generally in the crosshairs of the American right which accuses them of being households of progressive protest.

A “progressive mess”, for Trump

Harvard, the oldest university in the States and one of the classified in the , has particularly attracted the wrath of the Republican president by attacking the freezing by his government of two billion dollars in federal subsidies, decided after the renowned institution refused to bend to a series of requirements by Donald Trump.

The American president wants a right of way on the procedures for the admission of students, the hiring of teachers or even universities programs in his viewfinder. Mr. Trump recently portrayed Harvard in “Extreme left anti -Semitic institution”and “Progressive mess” and a “Threat to democracy”.

In her letter, the Secretary of Education accuses Harvard of being “Engaged in a systemic model of non-compliance with federal law”, “To continue to engage in odious racism” or “Catastrophic management”. “The today’s letter marks the end of university subsidies”concludes Mme McMahon.

In a message on to former students whose agency France-Presse was aware, Alan Garber stressed that the university was engaged in a long existential battle and appealed to donations.
