China has hardened standards for electric car batteries sold on its territory. From now on, they should no longer take on fire or explode. The Chinese giant Catl announces that it has already obtained certification.
Although rare, fires of electric car batteries are always impressive and difficult to master. To improve the reliability of cars a little more, and alleviate this risk, the Chinese government has adopted a new standard “of safety requirements for electric vehicle feeding batteries”, reported Carnewschina on April 17.
And already, some say they comply with it already. According to the same media, the largest manufacturer of batteries for electric cars, CATL, said on April 27, responding to this new local standard, with a lot in advance: the latter will officially come into force from July 1, 2026.
The battery pack and CATL cells are certified
Not only was the Catl battery pack tested, but the cells that also compose it. This is the “Qilin” battery using “Cell-to-Pack” technology, which goes on intermediate modules. Certification was validated by the Chinese Automobile Research and Technology Center (Catarc), the same organization that takes care of C-NCAP crash tests.
If the Chinese battery giant has so quickly happened to meet this more restrictive standard, it was because it was not far from being before the government put it in place. CATL claims that its batteries do not have the risk of thermal runoff.
No more risk of battery fire in Europe?
As we explained at the announcement of this new standard, this will logically force local manufacturers to quickly put themselves on the page, and should also push foreign actors to do the same.
CATL provides many brands present in Europe as Zeekr, Lotus and Volvo, all three belonging to the Geely Chinese group. In the near future, Stellantis will also be one of the customers of the Asian manufacturer. Finally, Mercedes also plans to use an LFP battery from Catl for its new electric CLA, to the ” 24 hours a day surveillance of the risk of thermal runoff According to the Chinese supplier.
