In March 2025, Algeria found its position as the first supplier of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Spain.
This recovery comes after a slight decline during the first two months of the year, for the benefit of the United States.
According to the latest data published by the specialized platform ATTATAthe share of Algeria in Spanish gas imports reached 33.4 %, which corresponds to a total volume of 12.21 terawatt hours (TWh).
Among these, 9.51 TWh were transported by gas pipeline in natural gas form, and 2.70 TWh in the form of LNG. This last category marks the return of algerian liquefied gas deliveries after an interruption of three consecutive months.
For comparison, in March 2024, Spain imported 8.71 TWh of natural gas and 3.52 TWh of Algerian LNG, which demonstrates a net rectification over one year for gas routed by pipeline, despite a slight decrease for LNG.
In a context of resumption of demand, total Spanish gas imports jumped 39 % between February and March 2025, reaching 36.53 TWh, against 26.32 TWh the previous month.
This increase is also increasing compared to March 2024, where the total volume was 29.12 TWh.
Gas: Algeria is ahead of the United States and Russia
LNG represented 71.8 % of volumes imported in March 2025, or 26.24 TWh, against 28.2 % for natural gas routed by pipeline, or 10.29 TWh.
This reinforcement of LNG in the Spanish supply structure confirms a trend started for several months, despite the volatility of flows.
Behind Algeria, the United States retains a strong position with a share of 32.2 %, or 11.76 TWh, exclusively in the form of LNG.
Russia is maintained in third position with 4.39 TWh (12 %), followed by Angola (3.07 TWh), Nigeria (2.003 TWh), Qatar (1.65 TWh) and Norway (0.66 TWh). France, with a modest contribution of 0.371 TWh, closes this list.
This Algerian resumption intervenes in a context of diversification of sources of energy supply in Europe, but also increased pressure on costs and long -term contracts.
The return of the Algerian LNG after several months of absence testifies to a tactical adjustment of Sonatrach in the face of growing competition on the European market.
