Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won gold at the Paris Olympic Games in the middle of a gender debate, revealed her intention to set up a division before participating in the next Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Khelif found himself in the center of a major storm at last year’s Olympic Games. There was a lot of controversy on the question of whether the young woman of 25 years and Lin Yu-Ting of Taiwan were eligible to compete with other boxers.
The International Boxing Federation (IBA) said that Khelif and Lin had failed the sexes for the sexes. They nevertheless competed, by decision of the Olympic International Committee, and won gold medals. Khelif was the champion in the 66 kg category, while Lin Yu-Ting was the champion in the 57 kg category.
In an interview with “Marca”, Khelif confirmed that he planned to participate in the 2028 Olympic Games, but in a higher weight category.
In fact, boxing categories have undergone changes and therefore Khelif will compete in a different category from Parisi.
-“I focus on obtaining my second Olympic gold medal in 2028 and I also prepare to become a professional,” Khelif said.
“What I want is to do a perfect job, to be in better shape than in Paris. Now I have a better mental and physical balance. To pass professional, I will wait for the right contract. A good offer will convince me. With the changes to the category, I must now compete in the 70 kg category. In Paris, I won in the 66 kg category, but I don’t think this change will be a problem for me. I measure 180 m and study with the team how to best adapt to the new category, “said the 25 -year -old young man.
Although her participation in the Olympic Games has been accompanied by many controversies, Khelif believes that she is a symbol for many women around the world.
In February, IBA, controlled by Russia, announced that it was pursuing the International Olympic Committee for authorizing Khelifi and Lin to compete in Paris 2024.
IBA is no longer recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Boxing only returned to the Olympic program after the formation of another world amateur boxing organization, known as World Boxing. This organization will publish rules of convenience in gender in the coming weeks.
