The Türkiye plans to deliver 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to Syria over the next three months to help produce electricity in this country torn apart by the war, the Turkish minister of Energy and Natural Resources said Alparslan Bayraktar on Thursday.
Natural gas, which should reach 2 billion cubic meters per year, will produce electricity in Syria, said the minister during an interview with the CNN Türk news channel.
He said that the 6 million cubic meters of gas per day will be sent by gas pipeline from Kilis province, southeast of Türkiye, to a natural gas power plant in the city of Aleppo, in northwestern Syria, where they will produce electricity.
“We have made rapid progress in Syria because our natural gas line has already spread to Kilis, near the Syrian border,” he added. “We will actually provide fuel to power plants with gas there.”
Bayraktar also indicated that efforts have been undertaken to provide electricity directly to Syria, in addition to natural gas. The Türkiye currently provides around 200 megawatts of electricity in Aleppo and has completed the authorization procedures necessary for other exports, added the Turkish minister.
“We plan to increase these exports by an additional 500 megawatts, in order to reach between 700 and 800 megawatts of electricity in the coming months,” he said.
-Bayraktar pointed out that 13 years of war in Syria seriously damaged the country’s infrastructure.
Note that the new Syrian energy minister Mohammed Al-Bashir recently made his first visit abroad to Türkiye and underlined the enormous energy needs of Syria, Bayraktar said: “At our bilateral meeting, the minister said to me:” I need 10,000 megawatts for Syria, but I can only produce 1,700 megawatts.
“Wherever you go to Syria today, you will see generators in front of each house. People try to produce electricity in a mobile way. Our contribution is therefore significant,” he added.
He stressed the importance of Türkiye energy exports to Syria.
“The oil, gas and mineral resources of Syria must quickly be integrated into the economy to meet its needs,” he concluded.
