The French Prime Minister, François Bayrou, alerted, Sunday, to what he described as a “form of chain explosion of French society” which affects the capacity of the French “to live together”.
Bayrou was expressed during an exclusive interview with the Journal du Dimanche (JDD) and published on May 4, during which he was questioned, among others, about Islamophobia.
Evasif on terminology in itself, Bayrou said that what mattered to him was rather the reality on the ground.
“You will not take me to the war of words. What matters to me is not the word is what is happening: a form of chain explosion of French society. And we must see what it is about. It touches the essential: the unity of the country, our ability to live together under the principles of republican universalism”, he explained.
The Prime Minister recognized the rise of rejection on the basis of religion, skin color or origin, at the level of French society, calling it “danger”.
“I see a danger of a danger: that of looking at his fellow citizens only by their origin, their skin color or their religion. I see the detestation of Muslims and Islam, the detestation of Jews and Judaism. And the detestation of Christians. With crimes in the three cases. And other hatreds still, soon, I have no doubt, alas!”, He explained.
-“The detestation of a fellow citizen for what he is, for his origin, for his faith, for his philosophy, I will never accept it,” he added, explaining that “the wars of religion” are “the symptom of the worst, and the negation of the Republic”.
Bayrou concluded his remarks by saying that: “Everyone has the right of a city and, at the same time, to understand the sensitivity of others, to put the right words on what others feel to defuse madness”.
The French Prime Minister was questioned about several other current issues, including the budgetary effort requested from the French in the coming years.
In this chapter, Bayrou has not excluded the upcoming holding of a referendum, whose call is the responsibility of the President of the Republic.
“It is an overall plan that I want to submit. He will ask for efforts from everyone and, by the extent that must be his, he cannot succeed if the French people do not support it,” said François Bayrou, recalling the challenge of bringing the public debt back to 3% of GDP in the medium term.
