The mayor of Athens promised Monday to regulate the use of electric scooters, whose use has become a “terrible nuisance” in the heart of the Greek capital.

“We are determined to set rules,” said the mayor, Haris Doukas, shortly after a meeting bringing together the four private companies operating in the city center.
“Scooters on the ramps, on the podotactile bands, in the middle of the street. I see dozens of cases like that every day, “he added in a statement.
The city provides for a plan with 70 locations dedicated to parking for electric scooters and will prohibit their use in certain areas, he said.

No calendar was communicated, but Haris Doukas said he wanted to “start immediately”, in cooperation with the operators.
More than 4,000 self-service scooters, operated by hoppy, hop, lime and ridemovi companies, currently circulates in the streets of Athens and the offenses linked to their use are increasing, according to the municipality.
Athens municipal police recorded 197 offenses in April, compared to 88 in March.
The city of Athens has around 640,000 inhabitants in an agglomeration of some 3.8 million people.
