The Chinese government has confirmed that it was studying a proposal from the United States for commercial negotiations. The statement comes a week after President Trump said discussions were already underway. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that the United States had repeatedly expressed their wish to start discussions with China through different channels.
Influential voices in China have also expressed their desire to participate in the negotiations. The nationalist blogger Ren Yi, known as the Fleshman Rabbit, said that sources had informed him of the frequent attempts of the United States to contact China about economic and commercial questions.
Delicate de -escalation
Previously, China refuted the statements of the United States that talks were already underway, saying that it had not started dialogue. The Chinese Foreign Ministry accused the United States of deceiving the public on the state of negotiations. REN also stressed that if China had given in to pressure from the United States, the latter would not have needed to seek to communicate proactively.
-- While taking note of the American proposal, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stressed the importance of real sincerity on the part of the United States during negotiations and warned against coercive tactics.
China has always criticized the American approach to commercial policy, describing it as intimidation. The current trade war, launched by Trump at the beginning of April, resulted in important customs duties for both parties: 145 percent on Chinese products and 125 percent on American products imported by China.
Attenuation of the trade war
Despite these positions, the two countries have set up exemptions from their respective customs rights in order to mitigate the economic benefits of the trade war. Recent data reports a slowdown in the activity of Chinese factories, attributed to significant changes in the world landscape. Xi Jinping urged civil servants to adapt to these international changes, while referring to mention the United States directly.
