The sales figures of the previous months of the European automobile market left little doubt as to the name of the best-selling new car of the year 2024: well ahead after the first eleven months, the Dacia Sandero had simply become uncatchable taking into account the gap with the Volkswagen Golf, the Renault Clio and the other models at the top of the ranking since last January.
The surprise is that this Dacia Sandero is finally ahead of another city model from the Renault group: the Clio which thus achieves a nice double after its “victory” in the 2024 French automobile market. While the Romanian claims 270,111 units sold over the whole of last year according to DataForce analysts, the Clio totaled 216,569 units sold over the same period. The first signs an increase of 14.3% compared to the figures for the year 2023, the second is “content” with a 6.5% increase. A great result for these two cars with a popular vocation, which ultimately tops the Volkswagen Golf, overtaken by the Clio with its 216,549 units sold (despite a nice increase of 17.5%)!
Leader of the European and worldwide market for the year 2023, the Tesla Model Y falls to fourth place with 210,484 units sold in 2024 (i.e. -17.5%). Even with the best volumes in 2023, it would not have resisted the rise of the low-cost city car which is setting quite a record. At the end of its career, the Volkswagen T-Roc finally finished fifth with 203,611 units distributed. It is ahead of the Peugeot 208, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the Toyota Yaris Cross, the Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Yaris. The new Dacia Duster finishes just outside the top 10.
The perfect illustration of the market trend?
The Dacia Sandero, whose base price is slightly under €13,000, thus takes over from a large electric SUV costing at least €44,990 in its cheapest version (even if it regularly benefited from promotions throughout the year). Quite a symbol for a new automobile industry dominated until 2021 by the Volkswagen Golf, this compact family car that dominated for more than a decade on the Old Continent.
-It’s difficult to find a better illustration of the evolution of our automobile market in which new cars cost on average €10,000 compared to prices ten years ago. Consumers now find themselves favoring small, inexpensive models.
Remember that the Tesla Model Y has just received a restyled version and is currently benefiting from a big discount with us in its High Autonomy Propulsion version. The Dacia Sandero has just slightly increased its prices in France and continues to move upmarket while remaining more affordable than city cars from general brands. Which model will come to first place in this year 2025 in our market? First element of response from the end of January for the January figures.
In December 2024, in any case, the Tesla Model Y managed to take a little revenge by beating the Dacia Sandero (with 28,426 copies, +15% compared to December 2023, against 22,025 copies and +20.3% for Romanian). Note the good fourth place of the Dacia Duster with 17,242 units sold (+46.3%!). Can it overtake everyone and become the best-selling car of 2025?
