“The priority is to join our architect colleagues” after Cyclone Chido (COARM)

Three days after the passage of Cyclone Chido, the Mayotte archipelago was devastated. The disaster which struck the islands which make up this French overseas territory, located between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique, on December 14, 2024, caused 21 deaths and extensive damage. But the results are still too difficult to establish. The prefect of the department, François-Xavier Bieuville, fears “several hundred“dead, even”a few thousand“. The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced on December 16 that he will decree a “national mourning“and that he will go to Mayotte”in the coming days“.

Electricity and water are still unavailable in some areas and many residents have lost everything. Some of the 30 architects working in Mayotte are not spared. Contacted by Batiactthe president of the Regional Council of the Order of Architects (Croa) of and Mayotte, Eric Hugel, takes stock of the current situation.
