The photographic observatory launches an appeal to holders of old postcards on Aubrac

As part of its photographic observatory visible on its website, the Aubrac regional natural park is launching a call to holders of old postcards.

“It’s work started from the creation of the Park which is coming to fruition today,” announces Nicolas Leblois, built heritage and landscape project manager at the Aubrac regional natural park. “The subject of preserving the landscapes of Aubrac had been identified in the charter as a priority action. This landscape heritage contributes very strongly to the notoriety of Aubrac. Although it may seem timeless, it sometimes evolves insidiously : urbanization, new infrastructure, disappearance of hedges or low walls, etc.”, explains Nicolas Leblois.

61 viewpoints to discover

In 2019, a first series of more than 200 photos was taken to serve as a basis for selection work in consultation with the inhabitants of the area. The work was also shared with partners (CAUE of the three departments, Udap and Dreal). The aim was to make a selection that covers a wide diversity of themes: natural spaces, agro-pastoral areas, town centers, but also housing estates, artisanal areas, etc. This resulted in 61 viewpoints which will now be photographed every two years, always in the same season.

We can play the game of 7 differences

Today, these photos are accessible on the internet, geolocated and comparable. “Everyone can play the game of seven differences” laughs Nicolas Leblois. “But it is above all a very interesting tool for analyzing the evolution of our landscapes. For an elected official, or any person who carries out a development or construction project, it allows us to observe the evolution of this or that type of environment similar to its own. This raises awareness of the preservation of our daily landscapes. This observatory could also be easily used by an audience of children and students, we are in the process of developing it into an educational game.

Taking old maps out of attics

To further enrich this observatory, the Park is launching a call for old postcards. If individuals have photos which correspond to the same points of view as those of the Aubrac landscape observatory, they do not hesitate to send them to the Park by email: nicolas.leblois@parc-naturel- aubrac.fr
