This Color That Generation Z Hates Above All Else

After moving into his current apartment four and a half years ago, Dan Howarth realized that gray would fit in effortlessly with the existing white walls, dark gray bathroom tiles, and gray stone door sills. Similarly, painting his bedroom a dark gray reinforced the atmosphere “cocoon” of this small room and made it more welcoming. While he doesn’t feel compelled to stick with gray for the rest of his life—his partner introduced a few pops of color when he moved in—he sees the choice as particularly wise given the current circumstances of many millennials. “It may not be the boldest shade, but it’s the perfect backdrop to live your life in.”he adds.

To take full advantage of millennial gray in decorating, you have to learn how to use it correctly. “In a lot of TikTok videos I’ve seen, the grays that are featured are dull and cold. These spaces lack personality, and you can’t pin it all on one color.”says interior designer Diana Byrne, who discovered the trend through her teenage daughters. “If you decide to go with just gray, it’s important to vary the shades—from light to medium to dark—to add depth to the room. Also, be sure to match the undertones to avoid a monotonous effect.”

Jenny Kaplan’s room is painted in Backdrop’s “Not So Delicate,” contrasting with Pieces’ red Maschi rug and other colorful accents. “I usually build my color palette around a focal piece, like a piece of furniture or a rug, that I want to highlight, and then choose a neutral color, like gray, as a secondary hue.”she explains.

Deepak Adhikary, a millennial working in the film industry in Los Angeles, has found himself more than once defending the trend of « gris millennial » in discussions. The young man enjoys playing with contrasts and textures, incorporating grey thoughtfully throughout his interior. For the bathroom he renovated himself, he opted for a concrete floor and grey walls, which he paired with a wooden vanity and clay-coloured shower tiles. This approach echoes that of Leigh Kirby of Weatherleigh Interiors. “Gray evokes nature, like a midnight sky or river rocks. It makes it easy to pair with other raw natural materials like wood, concrete and metals.”explains the designer.
