At the Hôtel-Dieu in Pont-l’Abbé, a fresco for the palliative care unit

“What interests me is bringing art into health,” explains Doctor Eve de la Guerrande, a general practitioner but also a tattoo artist and painter-illustrator. The health professional who devoted her medical thesis to breast reconstruction tattooing has continued to unravel this thread “to bring softness and well-being” to the health sector. Since April, at the Pont-l’Abbé hospital, she has been offering tattoos to cover an unsightly scar or as part of a reconstruction after a mastectomy for breast cancer. “This allows the person to reclaim their body, which they have often felt dispossessed of. It is a great open-mindedness on the part of the hospital to welcome me,” says the young woman happily.

“It feels good to everyone”

She was also asked for her talent as a painter to give a positive image to the palliative care unit of the Hôtel-Dieu. A huge fresco representing a wave and aquatic elements with the warm colors found at sunset brightens up the large white wall of the department.

“It does everyone good. When faced with art, we are all human beings. It brings us together. It leaves room for emotion and appeals to each person’s sensitivity while revealing their uniqueness,” says Eve de la Guerrande, who cites a 2019 WHO report specifying that art can be beneficial for health. She involved the healthcare team as well as the patients in choosing the project, the result of which was particularly appreciated. The thinking on other fresco projects, particularly for the day hospital, is also well advanced.
