In Rennes, if you want to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, you have no other choice than to go to the historic center of the city, Quai Emile-Zola. Well, that was before. Soon, people from Rennes will also be able to go to the Maurepas district.
At the beginning of 2025, a second branch of the museum will see the light of day, at the foot of the so-called “La Banane” social housing, opposite the Gros-Chêne metro station. The idea of the City? “Guarantee everyone equal access and participation in cultural life, but also transform the image and accessibility of the Museum of Fine Arts.”
Two free exhibitions each year
This new museum, with a surface area of 347 m², will be on two floors, with an exhibition, meeting and screening space on the ground floor, and other exhibition rooms and a mediation room upstairs. The ancient and contemporary works of art presented at Maurepas will come from the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts.
A games library and a reception area for young children managed by the social center will also open in the coming years, in adjacent premises. Total cost of the operation: 2.5 million euros.
Two free temporary exhibitions, developed from the museum’s collections, will be presented each year, “one of which will be co-constructed with the residents”, specifies the community.
“The Banana”, also a deal point
The creation of this second branch of the Museum of Fine Arts is located in the heart of an area where drug trafficking is significant. For several weeks, a violent war has pitted two gangs of drug traffickers against each other for control of the Banana sector where there are several extremely lucrative deal points. Six shootings have taken place in this neighborhood in the last two months.
