THE ORIGINS OF THEPOOR ART : AN ITALIAN ARTISTIC REVOLUTION

Born in the mid-1960s in Italy,Poor Art is an avant-garde movement that emerged in reaction to the hegemony of American art and consumer society. Art critic Germano Celant was the first to use the term “Arte Povera” in 1967, to describe the work of Italian artists who used poor or ordinary materials in order to challenge the artistic conventions of the time.

The thirteen main protagonists of this movement—Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario and Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini and Gilberto Zorio—sought to break with traditional techniques by exploring new modes of expression. Their work is characterized by the use of natural materials such as earth, wood, stones, plants, but also industrial elements such as metal, glass or neon.

L’Poor Art aims to reconnect art with everyday life, emphasizing the creative process rather than the final product. Artists in this movement expanded the realms of painting, sculpture, and performance, creating some of the first installations in art history. Their works invite the viewer to a sensory and emotional experience, questioning the notions of materiality, time and space.

THE CONTEMPORARY LEGACY OFPOOR ART

The influence ofPoor Art extends well beyond the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition highlights this influence by presenting works by thirteen contemporary artists whose practice resonates with that of the movement’s pioneers. Among them, David Hammons, William Kentridge, Jimmie Durham, Anna Boghiguian, Pierre Huyghe, Grazia Toderi, Adrián Villar Rojas, Mario Garcia Torres, Renato Leotta, Agnieszka Kurant, Otobong Nkanga, Theaster Gates and D Harding.

These artists, active from the 1980s to the present day, explore in their own way themes dear toPoor Artsuch as materiality, temporality and the relationship between man and nature. For example, Pierre Huyghe creates immersive installations that question the perception of time and space, while Otobong Nkanga explores notions of identity and memory through organic and industrial materials.

The dialogue between historical and contemporary works offers an enriching perspective on the heritage ofPoor Art. It highlights the continued relevance of the issues raised by the movement, particularly in the face of current environmental and societal challenges.
