Until July, haute couture pieces such as dresses from major designers interact with the collections of the Parisian museum. A way of showing that the arts are porous and that inspiration has no borders.

For the first time in its history, the largest museum in the world invites the biggest names in couture. Dior, Chanel, Givenchy, Mugler… 70 iconic silhouettes are exhibited at the heart of the permanent collections. Visitors are won over. The outfits arrived a few days ago. With infinite precaution, each creation is associated with an object.

Most of these pieces were inspired by objects kept at the Louvre. “The history of art has always inspired creators. Here, the idea is to go to the heart of the Louvre (…) and show how this principle is alive”explains Olivier Gabet, general curator of heritage at the Louvre museum. Under the pencil of Karl Lagerfeld, an 18th century chest of drawers becomes an exuberant suit. There, Renaissance armor transforms into a gleaming dress. For one of his emblematic pieces, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac was inspired by a classic tapestry. This unique dialogue between couture and culture can be discovered for six months.
