While, by chance of the calendar, the Belgian electronic music festival Tomorrowland is fined 727,000 euros for having distributed single-use plastic cups – although banned – during its July 2024 event, “ it is high time to put the deposit on packaging back on the political agenda »: in a column addressed to political decision-makers published by the Belgian daily The evening on January 14, 2025, some 80 Belgian actors from the associative world and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are calling for deposits – for recycling, in this case – to be imposed in Belgium. Echoing the French debates, the authors rely in particular on the regulation on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR) adopted in December 2024 to support their argument. The tone is alarmist: “ Happy New Year 2025! The year in which your predecessors promised us the introduction of a deposit on cans and bottles. However, despite these promises, this is a false start for the deposit. Beverage packaging will therefore continue to accumulate in nature this year. How many more animals will have to be killed, how many tonnes of cans and bottles will have to be collected from our shores before you introduce the deposit? »

Silver tray

Appearing as “ inevitable » due to the failures of return bonuses and other digital devices, the deposit, which is presented on “ a silver platter ”, is seen as a solution to stem the scourge of litter. Conclusion : ” Now is not the time to look for hypothetical alternative solutions that do not exist. We urge you, ladies and gentlemen policy makers, to introduce the deposit to prevent plastic bottles and cans from invading our streets, killing our ruminants, marine species and polluting our fields and our oceans “. For Tomorrowland, the decision has been made: make way for reusable returnable cups in July 2025! The festival welcomes some 500,000 people.

Sweden increases its prices
In Sweden, the deposit for recycling beverage packaging is managed by Returpack. In January 2025, its boss, Tomas Kjellker, announced an increase in the amounts. The deposit will increase from 1 to 2 Swedish crowns—from 0.09 to 0.17 euros—for metal cans and small polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and from 2 to 3 Swedish crowns—0.17 to 0.26 euros — for large PET bottles. The system has some 11,000 references for a flow of 2 billion units per year. All deposit machines — Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) — must be updated. The amount being printed on the packaging, the decoration update is scheduled until September 2025.
