Michèle Bernier regrets a society where overweight people have to fight for their right to acceptance. “Actually, I don’t know why we’re mad at them.” She deplores a relentlessness towards curvy people : “there’s a bit of this thing where we say ‘it’s your fault, you should not eat'”.
Despite this context, she claims to live well with her curves, having chosen to make peace with herself: “I’ve stopped torturing myself now. Live so short. Life goes too fast.” For the actress, the main thing lies in health. She emphasizes that the only valid reasons to worry about one’s weight are medical: “From the moment one is more or less well with yourself, well there you go.”
A career held back by stereotypes
On a professional level, Michèle Bernier admits that physical appearance can be a hindrance, particularly in cinema. She denounces an industry dominated by a masculine and normative visionwhere roles are often distributed according to aesthetic criteria: “At some point, you have to please the producers and the directors and as long as there are only straight men doing that, they will say to themselves ‘she, she m ‘excites her, she doesn’t excite me’.
The actress joins the criticism of other figures in the industry such as Muriel Robin, recalling that desire is at the heart of the profession : “It’s a job of desire anyway. But if we don’t know how to deal with women “a little apart”, well it’s more complicated for us.” Michèle Bernier concludes with a certain bitterness: “It’s sure that it closes doors, it is sure and certain.”
