They revisited their memories

The families of residents of the La Source nursing home discovered, on Wednesday, an original photo exhibition, created by the residents themselves with the support of Laurent Baude, visual photographer and teacher at Esad d’Orléans.

He asked them to bring their family photos and, together, every week, for three months, they selected photos and reworked them with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) software.

“To power this software, I invited them to suggest a series of keywords based on the photo we wanted to modify. Then, we integrated the artificially created image into the original photo,” says Laurent Baude.

As a result, on a transformed photo, half turns out to be original and the other half designed by artificial intelligence without it being possible, most often, to distinguish the real from the fake.

“At the beginning of September, during our first workshops, I produced a black and white and color portrait of each of the participants. » For some residents, these portraits were a real shock. “It’s been a long time since I last saw myself in a photo,” remarks Marie Joe, delighted to discover her face on one of the albums on display. “Joël told us that he went to the photo-AI workshop every week and he seemed very interested,” says Sophie, his sister. “I recognized my little sister and my uncle on a bike in one of the paintings they created. » These large Atlas plates, hung on the wall, bring together a series of photos selected and reworked by the group on a theme (beach, animals, mountains, etc.). Beyond promoting self-esteem and exchange between residents, these workshops designed by Laurent Baude as an artistic action question the construction of memories and the fragility of memory.
