It looks like a breast, but this “breast” emerges from the wall like a thorn, sharp, capable – who knows? – to hurt you, despite its apparent softness, its flesh color, its curves. Thornthe ambiguous work of Manon Wertenbroek, opens, in three copies, the exhibition Breasts on Purpose which is held at the Espace Arlaud in Lausanne. Thorn highlights the beauty of this part of the body, but also reminds – indirectly – that it is often there, in the breast, that cancer attacks. In front, Pointer, a sculpture in the shape of a fuchsia pink syringe installed by the RM duo in turn evokes vulnerability and care. One floor higher, creatures imagined by Gina Proenza actually stick their tongues out at illness (The Natural Friend2017). Not far from there, Alfredo Aceto also appears, sticking his tongue out in Egg-Human I2022.
Isn’t it armor that shines a little further? A sort of chain mail, made in crochet, of an iridescent thread, which seems to offer something to protect oneself… It is You are everythingwhite, sparkling and undoubtedly magical silhouettes created by Emma Lucy Linford. The public thus moves forward, discovering the works of 48 contemporary artists, challenged, shaken, sometimes amused, absorbed, oscillating between anguish and reparation, between exorcism and beauty, between vitality and loss. Flesh pink, neon or fuchsia, is coming back little by little, but black is also very present.
