PLANET MARKETS – Day 8. Catherine Deneuve, her daughter Chiara Mastroianni and the entire film team Marcello Mio by Christophe Honoré – in official competition – walked the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival on May 21.

It’s the story of a film with a five-star cast that finds itself in official competition at Cannes. We are talking here about Marcello Mio, a comedy by Christophe Honoré which follows Chiara, the daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni who, one summer, decides to slip into her father’s shoes. For the purposes of the feature film – one of the most anticipated at the Cannes Film Festival, presented in preview this May 21 – the heroine of Donkey Skin (1970) plays himself while his daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, plays her father on screen, who died in 1996 following pancreatic cancer. The result is a film in which the “daughter of” becomes the star, sometimes funny, sometimes touching.

Also showing in Marcello Mio : Benjamin Biolay and Melvil Poupaud, the two ex-companions of Chiara Mastroianni. We also note the presence of Nicole Garcia, Fabrice Luchini or even that of the British actor Hugh Skinner who we could see in Falling for Figaro (2020). Highlight of the show: this comedy celebrates the 100th birthday of actor Marcello Mastroianni, born in September 1924. All in all, this film pays homage to a great family of French cinema, and allows Christophe Honoré to establish himself ever more on the red carpet of the Croisette: Marcello Mio is his third film which finds itself in official competition after Please, love and run fast (2018) and Love songs (2007).

Sparks of stars

This May 21, the Olympic flame was the first highly anticipated “celebrity” of the evening, carried all along the red carpet by many Olympic and Paralympic athletes: Arnaud Assoumani, Paralympic long jump champion, relayed by Alexis Hanquinquant, gold medalist. gold in the paratriathlon in 2021; Nélia Barbosa, Paralympic kayak vice-champion in Japan as well as Marie Patouillet, bronze medalist in para-cycling in 2021. We also meet the president of the organizing committee of the Olympic Games Tony Estanguet, as well as the judoka Thierry Rey and the basketball player Iliana Rupert. Marie-José Pérec, double world champion in the 400 meters, was the last to proudly raise the flame to the soundtrack of Rocky.

Then, a little later, sport was relayed by cinema. Daniel Auteuil in costume, like the American actor Matt Dillon (Mary at all cost, 1998), actress Rebecca Marder and Marina Foïs dressed in a gold minidress with straps. After the appearances of Charlotte Casiraghi, Valeria Golino and Emmanuelle Béart in oversized white shirts, the most anticipated mother-daughter duo of the evening took the stage. Catherine Deneuve first, dressed in a black satin leather jacket set with a bib embroidered with fruit motifs, all by Chanel. Behind her, Chiara Mastroianni in a long-sleeved black dress close to the body and studded with sequins. Surrounded by the film crew – including an exhilarated Fabrice Luchini – the two most courted women of the evening performed discreetly, elegantly and masterfully. Enough to further support the emotion that could be read in their looks.
