Kristen Stewart on Hollywood hypocrisy: “cool, feminist films, you’ve made 4”

While Hollywood sometimes congratulates itself for its inclusiveness, Kristen Stewart dots the i’s by reminding us that the proportion of female directors remains derisory.

In an industry where form sometimes prevails over substance, Kristen Stewart launches an uncompromising rant against the hypocrisy that is rife in Hollywood. Far from the spotlight and the red carpets, the 34-year-old actress and director has pleaded for a profound change in representations in the film industry.

“We’re producing Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film!” We are producing Margot Robbie’s film! »

In a recent interview with the magazine To carryStewart pointed out the phenomenon of “box ticking”which could be translated as “box checked”. This expression refers to the fact of giving an illusion of progresswhile power relations remain unchanged. Kristen Stewart has thus lifted the veil on all these illusions created by Hollywood, which thinks that we can “check these little boxes to get rid of the patriarchy”.

Rather than just paving the way for a handful of privileged women to get opportunities at major studios, Stewart calls for a real diversity and inclusion policy :

“It’s easy for them to say, ‘Look what we’re doing. We are producing Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film! We’re producing Margot Robbie’s film!’ And you’re like, ‘Okay, cool. You chose four.’ »

Kristen Stewart’s first feature film

Determined to make her voice heard by jumping head-on into issues of inclusion, Stewart turned her attention to directing his first feature filmtitled The Chronology of Water. So far, Stewart has only gone behind the camera to direct music videos and short films.

But for her, this new film isn’t about career, it’s a statement of principles. “I’m going to make this film before working for anyone else” she said. “I will leave this damn industry if necessary. I won’t make another damn movie until I make this one. » Her commitment has not gone unnoticed, attracting attention at Sundance where she is actively seeking funding for her project.

Adapted from the memoirs of American writer Lidia Yuknavitch, the film will delve into questions that are still too little addressed in cinema. “My film is about incest, periods, a woman who violently re-appropriates her voice and her body. It’s hard to watch at times… but it’s going to be a roller coaster of thrills.” announced Kristen Stewart.
