The Lumière Institute in Lyon removes Gérard Depardieu’s plaque after damage

On the filmmakers’ wall in the 8th arrondissement of Lyon, you can find the names of all the Lumière Awards awarded since the start of the Lumière Festival.

Except that as spotted by Le Progrès, the plaque bearing the name of Gérard Depardieu has disappeared.

The famous French actor, in turmoil after being accused of sexual assault, received his Lumière Prize in 2011 from Thierry Frémaux and Fanny Ardant. And since then, his name has stood alongside those of Clint Eastwood, Wong Kar-Wai and Catherine Deneuve.

It remained to be seen whether the plaque had been removed by feminist activists, a fan of the actor wishing to keep a souvenir or by the Lumière Institute, disowning the actor.

According to our colleagues, it was the Institut Lumière which made the decision to have Gérard Depardieu’s plaque removed from its wall. However, this is not a “taking a position” in the legal aspect in which the interpreter of Cyrano de Bergerac is entangled, but rather a precaution after a series of degradations committed in recent months.

Will the name of Gérard Depardieu one day return to fill the gaping hole on the filmmakers’ wall?
