The First Prize of the 13 edition of the National Competition for Young Architects, organized by the specialized magazine “Vie de Villes” and accompanied by the Algerian Cement Industrial Group (GICA), was awarded to the young architect Safia Mokrani from Tizi Ouzou.

The award ceremony took place in the Ali-Maâchi room of the Safex Exhibition Center (Pins maritimes), on the sidelines of the 26th edition of the International Building, Construction Materials and Public Works Exhibition ( Batimatec), which takes place from May 5 to 9.

The young architect won this prize among eight finalist projects which were in the running for this national competition whose theme was “Rethinking common spaces in housing estates”.

The second prize of this competition was awarded to the young architect Youcef Fares Belhadid from Algiers, while the third prize was awarded to Nadir Madjoudj from Boumerdès.

These three winners received checks for 400,000 DA for the first and a “Golden Charrette”, 200,000 DA and a silver medal for the second, and 100,000 DA and a bronze medal for the third.

This competition, accompanied and sponsored by the Algerian Cement Industrial Group (GICA) and the Algerian companies Aymen Promotion, Sika Algeria and the company “Algal +”, allowed participating architects to propose innovative and sustainable solutions to transform outdoor spaces and building terraces in the large urban city of Ali Mandjeli in the wilaya of Constantine.

The three winners took into consideration, according to the members of the jury, the issues of water saving, the valorization of vegetation and the promotion of renewable energies, as well as the aspects and specificities of Algerian society (traditions , conviviality and events such as wedding parties).

As part of their projects, these finalist candidates proposed ideas for exterior layouts of courtyards and streets in order to create opportunities for exchanges, meetings and spaces for children and women, by integrating ecological dimensions, aesthetic and societal.

Speaking on this occasion, Akli Amrouche, urban architect, director of the magazine “Vie de Villes”, affirmed that the three finalists of this 13th edition were chosen from among the 438 candidates who were initially registered for this national competition.

Mr. Amrouche also underlined that this national architectural competition tends to become “a real tradition allowing young participants to engage in reflection and the construction of a new type of habitat which reflects the culture and Algerian civilization.

In this wake, he observed that all of the development projects proposed by the candidates, which used new design technologies and innovative materials, are feasible and can be supported by the project owners, while noting that the jury which ensured the selection of these three finalists is made up of professionals and senior architects who have accumulated extensive experience in this field.
