British actor Bernard Hill, who played King Théoden in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings and the tragic Captain Smith in Titanicdied Sunday morning at the age of 79, announced his manager Lou Coulson.

Revealed in the early 1980s for his role as an unemployed man in the multi-award winning television series Boys from the BlackstuffBernard Hill has had a prolific career on British television.

This role allowed him a first appointment to the BAFTA.

He played many supporting roles, in Gothika, The Most Beautiful Victory And Valkyrieor At the sources of the Nileby Rob Rafelson (1990) or Found guilty (1999), by Clint Eastwood.

His death comes on the same day that the second season of the drama series BBC The Responder began to be broadcast. Bernard Hill plays the role of the star of the series, Martin Freeman.

Bernard Hill has made his way to the screens. His long career has been marked by legendary and remarkable roles which are testimonies of his great talentsaid Lindsay Salt, director of drama programming at the BBC.
