Several Belgians on vacation in northern Italy suffered very intense thunderstorms last night. Around Lake Garda, many cars were damaged and several people were injured due to hail. A situation which could repeat itself this Tuesday, in particular in the region of Venice, before experiencing a lull, specifies the Italian meteorological service.

“The car is completely damaged, there are even holes in the bodywork”, reports Jürgen Vermander to our colleagues from HLN, who evokes hailstones “the size of a tennis ball”. The Belgian, who is staying at the Bella Italia campsite on the southern shore of Lake Garda, has never seen such a storm. “The parking lot has become a car graveyard”.

Dzengiz Tafa, who lives ten kilometers away, makes the same observation. “The windshield of my car is completely destroyed. The damage is not limited to his vehicle: “There are a hundred cars here. They are all ransacked.”

In Sirmione, “two children and two adults were injured. They had to be taken care of by the emergency services. A lady next to us took the full brunt of several hailstorms and today has large bruises on her body,” say Kristof Jansen and Dorien Demunter.

Their car was also damaged. “The roof, the hood, the right side, the headlights as well as several windows, including the windshield were affected”.

Same story for Latifa Salhi. The storm also hit the small campsite where she lives. “Electricity was cut, tents, caravans and cars were destroyed by hailstones the size of tennis balls.”

“We went to get blankets to protect our car windows and we hosted a mother with three children in our accommodation,” she continues. “A man was taken to hospital after being hit in the skull by a hailstone. Our tour operator Vacansoleil is struggling to find solutions”.

“Our holidays are turning into a nightmare”, testifies Nick Andries, sharing photos of his severely damaged car. “For Italians, such a storm is truly unprecedented.”
