“Horrible”, “a cold shower”… Donald Trump’s incendiary call to the Danish Prime Minister to buy Greenland – Libération

Ring dring, it’s Donald Trump on the phone. It is an understatement to say that the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, must not have been delighted last week when she picked up the phone. Especially since, according to the information revealed this Friday January 24 by the Financial Times, the telephone conversation between the two counterparts would have “gone very badly”. As his return to the White House approaches, the American president called Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday to tell her in person his wishes for him «acheter» Greenland.

The territory, property of the Kingdom of Denmark, is not for sale, the head of the Danish government would have replied in substance, during this 45-minute call. After being rejected, Donald Trump would have shown himself “aggressive and confrontational” towards Mette Frederiksen, according to sources interviewed by the British daily.

“It was horrible, detailed one of them. It was very firm, it was a cold shower. Until now, it was difficult to take him seriously. But I now think it’s serious, and potentially very dangerous.” A former Danish official agreed: “It was a very difficult conversation. He threatened Denmark with targeted measures, such as imposing tariffs.”

Yet another Trumpist delusion? The details of the call have in any case stoked Copenhagen’s fears. “The intentions [des Etats-Unis] are very clear. They want [le Groenland]», reports another source cited by the Financial Times, according to whomthe Danes have gone into crisis mode.” Questioned by the British media, the Prime Minister’s office was careful not to confirm the content of the call.

“A wonderful place”

Donald Trump said in 2019, during his first term, that he wanted to buy Greenland. An offer then rejected by the representatives of the territory and Denmark.

Just after his inauguration, the new 47th President of the United States put a coin back into the machine, affirming to journalists that he was “sure that Denmark [allait] get used to the idea” to cede territory to him, adding: “Greenland is a wonderful place, we need it for international security.” The American billionaire has also extended his expansionist aims to the Panama Canal and even to Canada in recent weeks.
