(Keystone-ATS) Asked by a journalist whether he would support strikes against these sites, he replied that he would discuss the issue with “very high-level people”, without specifying who or when. “It would be really nice if we could solve this problem without having to take that extra step,” he said.

President Trump was speaking in the Oval Office at the White House after signing several executive orders. “We have to hope that Iran will conclude an agreement and, if that is not the case, I think it does not matter either,” he said again.

Nuclear deal

Donald Trump was the architect of a so-called “maximum pressure” policy towards Iran during his first presidential term (2017-2021).

He withdrew the United States in 2018 from the international Iranian nuclear agreement, concluded three years earlier and which offered Tehran relief from sanctions in exchange for limiting its nuclear ambitions.

Donald Trump repeatedly suggested during his campaign that Israel could strike Iranian nuclear facilities.

According to the New York Times, Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and close friend of Trump, met with a senior Iranian official after the November 5 presidential election to try to defuse tensions.
