US President Donald Trump signed a decree in front of the press on Thursday pardoning 23 people prosecuted by the previous government for participating in anti-abortion protests.
These people “should not have been prosecuted,” he said, adding: “It’s a great honor to sign this.” The announcement comes on the eve of a major anti-abortion demonstration in Washington, called the “March for Life.”
According to the press, the 78-year-old billionaire must participate by videoconference, while Vice-President JD Vance is expected on site.
-The use of abortion prohibited or limited in many conservative states
Donald Trump deliberately remained vague on the politically burning issue of the right to abortion during his campaign.
While the Christian right is calling for federal restrictions on the federal pregnancy ban, the Republican said he wants to leave this jurisdiction to the American states.
However, he has congratulated himself on several occasions for having contributed, through his appointments to the Supreme Court, to the end of the constitutional right to abortion decided in June 2022 by the highest American court. Following this reversal in jurisprudence, many conservative states have banned or very severely limited the use of abortion.
A series of graces
Since his inauguration on Monday, Donald Trump has decided on a series of pardons intended to satisfy his base of supporters, starting with the spectacular one granted to 1,500 people convicted of storming the Capitol in January 2021.
He also pardoned two police officers who had been convicted for an illegal chase after which a black man was killed in 2020.
